What is Pilates?
Pilates is a gentle and effective form of exercise developed by Joseph Pilates. Exercises focus on the deep postural muscles of the back and abdomen to improve core stability and strength. Pilates exercises combine strength and flexibility, which helps to rebalance the body and restore normal/natural movement.
These muscles are: Transversus Abdominus, the diaphragm, a back muscle called Multifidus, and the pelvic floor muscles. Together they form a cylinder of stability around the spine. This is called the central core in Pilates. Re-training these muscles helps to increase spinal stability which can help to reduce back pain.
Emer trained with the Australian Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute (APPI). APPI is the leading authority in the delivery of safe and effective pilates teacher training for physiotherapists in the UK. Emer has taught specialist Pilates classes since 2004 in Sheffield. As a physiotherapist and Pilates instructor, she is ideally placed to select the appropriate exercise programme and guide your rehabilitation.
A range of Pilates equipment such as the foam roller, gym ball, and theraband are used in our classes, complimenting mat-work exercises. This combined approach keeps the classes progressive, stimulating, motivating, appealing and fun.
Pilates exercises are modified and tailored to your needs and are suitable for all ages and abilities. It can be appropriate for those returning to exercise or for the athlete keen to avoid injury. Classes are small to guarantee individual attention and this ensures the exercises are performed correctly.
